What's going on?

What follows is an update on the different members of the family.

Jennifer: Still working hard at work. Her schedule is basically 1 week on (12 hour shifts at night with a couple of 4 hour evening shifts thrown in for good measure), and one week off.

School starts for the kids in two weeks. Aidan will be in 3rd grade, Addie in 2nd, and my little Sony Bear starts kindergarten (Jenni and I are not ready for this). Colette wins the opportunity to spend much one-on-one-on-one time with Mommy and Daddy. All the kids are doing well. They are learning how to bicker and yell like good siblings.

As for me (Jeremy), classes start next week. This semester I am taking 4 classes (Graph Theory, Applied Analysis, Linear Programming, and either Mathematical Coding Theory or Projective Geometry). If all goes according to plan, I will finish my master's degree next May. I hope to start looking for a job in the spring. If anyone knows anyone who is looking to higher a mathematician with some programming experience, let me know.

Simon continues to slobber and sleep.

I have been roasting my own coffee for several years now. Both Jenni and myself far prefer this coffee to anything else (Starbucks' charcoals nearly make me gag). Last week, my Fresh Roast 8 coffee roaster stopped working. I had known that you can use a hot air popcorn popper for this purpose (that is all the Fresh Roast 8 basically is). So I used our popper to roast some beans. Viola! It was great.
I highly recommend roasting your own coffee. Sweet Marias is a website that is a great source of information on roasting coffee. They sell green beans (raw coffee beans) as well as diverse supplies. They have an instruction sheet on roasting your own beans (including using the hot air popcorn popper). If you use this method, note that their is a good bit of smoke (which smells good but will set off your smoke alarm) and a good bit of chaff. You will want to roast outside. You can also buy roasters from them (at as good a price as anywhere else). Someday, I hope to buy this. They have a great selection of green beans (I suggest you start with this). My personal favorite is Costa Rican. They tend to be light and fruity. I also like anything from Central or South America, and an island (i.e. Puerto Rica, Papua New Guinea, Dominican Republic) is good. If you want to go fancy (and expensive) go with Jamaica or Hawaii.
The prices at Sweet Maria's are not bad. For some less expensive (and less choices) go with Burman coffee. With either choice, you can expect to pay $6 to $9 per pound (including shipping). You cannot get gourmet coffee for those prices, and home roasted is better than any gourmet I have tasted.
If you live in Denver, you can get green coffee from Kaladi Brother's Coffee. They are located on Evans right next to DU. You may have to visit the store to order. Their prices are around $7 per pound. They are a great coffee shop, and you get a free coffee when you buy green beans.

I recently acquired a $10 iTunes gift card. This is nice. I bought one album, Mozart's Requiem, performed by Academy of St. Martin in the Fields, led by the incomparable Sir Neville Mariner. Here is a clip from the film Amadeus, (a great film--you should watch it) featuring some of the music--it gives me chills.

That album cost only $8, so I had $2 to go. I purchased what may very well be the greatest pop song ever (at least according to Brian Wilson, who knows a thing or two). The opening drum beats are amazing.

I had $.77 left (after tax). So I bought a $.69 song because I could buy no other.

There are two mistakes in particular that many believers make. This can lead to a frustrating walk. The first is expecting God to do that which He has never promised He would do. The second is like unto it--seeking to do that which God has already done for him. Each these involve in a lack of faith, or a lack of understanding of the Word, or both. The other day I was bemoaning (to myself) the lack of references to Harmony Korine in our present culture. Today I read this. We are saved.

Harmony Korine came to "fame" back in 1995 as a teenager when we wrote the screenplay to the raw and controversial movie Kids.

He has directed several movies of his own, including Gummo, Julien Donkey-Boy, and Mister Lonely--all of which are extremely odd.

Some of my favorites were Mouchette and A Man Escaped, both by Robert Bresson, who is a quite sublime filmmaker. I also enjoyed The Passion of Joan of Arc and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, both of which I had seen before. They are worth seeing more than once. Adventureland and Zombieland have similar titles, star Jessie Eisenberg, and involve an amusement park. I have not seen The Social Network yet, but I will as soon as I can. Le Cercle Rouge was close to my favorite. It is a very stylish French crime thriller. The "heist" scene is about 20 minutes long, and there is absolutely no dialog during it--masterful filmmaking.

Cheesy chicken and rice casserole

I adapted this recipe from Campbells

Some chicken pieces (3 or 4, totaling about 1.5 pounds)
Some onion (maybe 1/2 a large onion)
Some garlic (maybe 2 or 3 cloves)
Some oregano or basil or both (however much you want)
2 cups water
1 cup rice
1 can condensed cream of chicken soup
Some vegetables (sometimes I use more than one kind)
Some cheese (cheddar or possibly mozzarella)

Mix all but the chicken in a casserole dish. Place the chicken on top. Cover and cook at 375 for about 50 minutes. Remove and distribute shredded cheese on top. Let set for a few minutes until the cheese melts, then serve.

I have been making this for a while. Campbells calls for onion and garlic powder. I think it tastes much better with the real thing. I mostly use chicken breast, but I have lately used boneless, skinless thighs, and I think the dark meat and fat make it taste better. I have used various types of vegetables, including corn, green beans, broccoli, and carrots. Last time I cooked this I used spinach, which was really good. I like using fresh herbs when I can get them. They make a big difference. I don't measure out most the stuff. I just put in what seems like enough.
